These are usually where people start out. I don't invest
any time joining banner exchanges or most of the hundreds of free
programs out there. Unless you're getting a large amount of
traffic already, you won't notice much of a difference. For
beginning webmasters, these programs are a catch-22 and will end
up spending loads of your time.
The one exception is the listbuilding exchanges like
List Inferno,
which help you build your ezine list and is very powerful.
